Our history: When the director, Lorri Leonard, researched and performed her published Master's thesis on the Effects of Education and Activities on Young Adults With Autism in 2012, she discovered that little or no services are available to young adults with autism once they completed high school or reached the age of 21. Mrs Leonard wanted to assist in fulfilling that need by creating her own non-profit organization, YAWA Inc, that specifically targeted those individuals. YAWA provides important resources to individuals with autism and their parents. Moreover, YAWA provides education and activities geared towards educating these individuals in life skills necessary for living an independent lifestyle. The results have already shown a significant change in behavior and knowledge that subsequently led to more independence for its participants. Equally important, YAWA has provided a portal to community acceptance through awareness and the participation of these individuals in various activities.
